About the Speaker Mary E. John was formerly Professor at the Centre for Women’s Development Studies, New Delhi. She was Director of the Centre from 2006-2012 and before that the Deputy Director of the Women’s Studies Programme at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi from 2001-2006. Major publications include Discrepant Dislocations: Feminism, Theory and Postcolonial Histories (reprinted 2021), A Question of Silence? The Sexual Economies of Modern India (reprinted 2021) and Women’s Studies in India: A Reader (2008). The co-edited volume Women in the Worlds of Labour: Interdisciplinary and Intersectional Perspectives and the monograph Child Marriage in an International Frame: A Feminist Review from India were published in 2021. She was the co-chair of a Task Force set up by the University Grants Commission to look into sexual harassment on Indian campuses and brought out the report “Saksham: Measures for Ensuring Safety of Women and Programmes for Gender Sensitization on Campuses” (2013). Her areas of interest span the field of women’s studies and feminism within the social sciences, with particular expertise in studies pertaining to marriage and family, education, and labour, as well as a more philosophical interest in the concepts and frameworks of feminist theoretical analysis. About the Chair Govind Kelkar is a feminist scholar, with a PhD in the political economy of China. She is a Visiting Professor, Council for Social Development and Institute for Human Development, India. She is the Executive Director, GenDev Centre for Research and Innovation, India, and was a Senior Adviser, Landesa, Seattle, USA (May 2013-March 2020). In concurrent assignments, Kelkar was the International Research Coordinator of ENERGIA International, The Netherlands and Research Lead on Gender and Energy at Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai. She is a Distinguished Adjunct Faculty of Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. Kelkar has the position of Honorary Professor in Institute of Ethnology, Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences, China, and Adjunct Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi. She has authored 16 books and numerous scholarly publications. Her recent book is Witch Hunts: Culture, Patriarchy and Structural Transformation (co-authored), Cambridge University Press, 2020.

About the Speaker Subrata K. Mitra is an Emeritus Professor of Political Science at Heidelberg University, Germany and an Adjunct Professor at Dublin City University (DCU), Dublin, Ireland. Prior to this, he was the Head of Department of Political Science (1994-2014) at South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University. He has been a Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University (Beijing), University of California, (Berkeley), National University of Singapore (Singapore), University of Nottingham (UK), University of Paris (France), Central University, Hyderabad (India), Quaid-i-Azam University (Islamabad/Pakistan), and Jawaharlal Nehru University (Delhi). Indian and Comparative politics, rational choice, governance, citizenship, political theory and foreign policy are among his main interests. About the Chair Ambassador Asoke Mukerji is a Distinguished Fellow at the Vivekananda International Foundation, New Delhi; an elected member of the Governing Council of the United Service Institution (USI) for 2023-2025; and a member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS), London. He teaches diplomacy at the Diplo Foundation, and writes and publishes regularly on international affairs in India and abroad. He served for over 37 years in the Indian Foreign Service, retiring as India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York in December 2015. He has represented India in various forums including in negotiations at the UN General Assembly in New York for Agenda 2030 and in the Commonwealth in 2007, and chaired the WTO Committee on Special Commitments for Trade in Services. He was India’s chief negotiator for the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum and chair of the SAARC Steering Committee. On the bilateral front, he represented India in the UK (2007-2010), Kazakhstan (2005-2007), Russia (2001-2005), the UAE (1998-2001) and in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as Charge d’affaires in 1992. He has published several books including, Stamped in Memory: Dubai’s Postal Service 1909-1999, India and the United Nations 1945-2015: a Photo Journey, Valour and Sacrifice: the first Indian Soldiers in Europe 1914-1916, and Gallipoli Revisited (2022).

About the Speaker Manoj Joshi is a Distinguished Fellow at the ORF. He was a member of the Task Force on National Security chaired by Mr. Naresh Chandra to propose reforms in the security apparatus of the country. He has held various posts such as the political editor of The Times of India, Editor (Views) Hindustan Times, Defence Editor of India Today, National Affairs Editor of Mail Today, the Washington Correspondent of The Financial Express, and a Special Correspondent of The Hindu in his three decades long career as a journalist. He has also been a member of the National Security Council’s Advisory Board. His recent work is Understanding India-China Border: The Enduring Threat of War in the High Himalayas (2022) and Bhutan-China: Settling Border Issues. Amb. P. Stobdan is a student of Asian Affairs. In his professional career spanning over 40 years, he held various assignments both in the government and outside. He is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the Delhi Policy Group (DPG) New Delhi, and President, Ladakh International Centre, Leh. Amit Ranjan is Research Fellow at the Institute South Asian Studies (ISAS), National University of Singapore. His research interests include water disputes, South Asian politics (India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh), India’s regional policy, and India’s internal security. His papers, review essays, and book reviews have been widely published in journals, including Asian Affairs, India Quarterly, South Asia Research, and Journal of Asian Security and International Affairs. He has also contributed commentaries, opinion editorials, and reviews in newspapers and websites. Prior to joining ISAS, Dr. Ranjan worked as a Research Fellow at the Indian Council of World Affairs, New Delhi. He completed his Doctoral studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Medha Bisht is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations at the South Asian University (SAU), New Delhi. Her research interests include Philosophy and Theory of International Relations, Water Governance and Diplomacy at International, Transboundary and Local level, Asian Diplomatic Thought, and Qualitative methods. Her book, Kautilya’s Arthashastra: Philosophy of Strategy has been published by Routledge (London and New York 2020). Before joining SAU, she was an Associate Fellow at MP-IDSA. About the Speaker Zhengxu Wang is a Distinguished Professor at the Department of Political Science, School of Public Administration of Zhejiang University in China. Prior to this, he was Distinguished Professor at Fudan University’s School of International Relations and Public Affairs. He obtained his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan, and subsequently obtained academic experiences in the National University of Singapore and the UK’s University of Nottingham, where he served as Associate Professor at its School of Contemporary Chinese Studies and Senior Fellow and Acting Director of its China Policy Institute. His research interests are comparative politics, Chinese politics, and empirical political science theories. About the Chair Rajiv Ranjan teaches at the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi, and is an Adjunct Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi. He is trained in Chinese language and previously taught international politics at Shanghai University, China. Kharis Templeman is a Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution and part of the Project on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific Region, as well as a lecturer at the Center for East Asian Studies at Stanford University. David Bachman is a Professor at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies. He was chair of the China Studies Program from 1992-2003 and Associate Director of the Jackson School from 2000-2001 and 2003-2010. Ellen Chang is Director of Arts and Culture at the Taiwan Studies Program at the University of Washington and a Ph.D. Candidate in Cinema & Media Studies.

About the Speaker Shachee Agnihotri is an Assistant Professor at the Amity University, Noida. She was the recipient of the India-China Government Doctoral Scholarship for her pursuit of a PhD at Zhejiang University. With an academic tenure spanning nearly five years, her pedagogical contributions extend across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Besides her teaching responsibilities, she has also assumed leadership roles, including Programme Leader for the History Programme, Member of Academic Council and Academic Audit Committee at Sharda University, Greater Noida. Her research interest includes Indian and world history, demography, and cultural issues with an interdisciplinary approach. She has nearly a dozen publications to her credit. Her latest work includes an edited book titled, Women's Identity and Representation in History & Literature along with another forthcoming edited book titled, Dynamics of World Politics & 21st Century Asia. She is also an Editorial Board Member of Open Philately, published by Middle Tennessee State University. About the Chair Partha Mukhopadhyay is a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Policy Research. Prior to this, he was part of the founding team at the Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC), focusing on private participation in infrastructure. He has also worked with the Export-Import Bank of India, and the World Bank in Washington. He has served as a faculty at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur and the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi. He has published extensively and writes frequently for the national media. He has also been associated with a number of government committees. Most recently, he was chair of the Working Group on Migration, Government of India and member of the High Level Railway Restructuring Committee, Ministry of Railways and of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. He also serves on the Scientific Advisory Council of LIRNEasia, Colombo. In 2006, he was chosen as one of the inaugural Fellows of the India China Institute, New School, New York, and in 2016, he was selected for a Residency at the Bellagio Center of the Rockefeller Foundation. His research interests are urbanisation, infrastructure, and the development paths of India and China.

About the Speaker Manju Rani Hara is an Associate Professor in the Centre for Chinese and South East Asian Studies, School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her doctoral thesis was on Literary Activism in China in the 1980s and 1990s: A Case Study of Wang Anyi and Wang Shuo. Her research interests are modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese society and culture, gender relations and Chinese media. About the Chair Avijit Banerjee is Professor in Chinese and Head of the Department of Chinese Language and Culture (Cheena Bhavana), Visva-Bharati University. Dr Banerjee completed Ph.D. in Chinese Language and Literature from Visva-Bharati. He studied in China at Beijing Language University during 1996-97 under the India-China Bilateral Cultural Exchange Programme. Dr. Banerjee has authored many articles and chapters in several volumes and co-edited two books titled India in the Eyes of the Chinese Youth in April 2016 and China Through the Eyes of Indian Youths in 2017. Dr Banerjee’s research interest includes Chinese language and India-China cultural studies. He has attended and presented papers in many national and international conferences. Dr Banerjee has most recently translated a book, titled Doctor and Internationalist Dwarkanath Kotnis: A Memorial Volume from Bengali into Chinese.

Dibyesh Anand is the Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement and Employability) at the University of Westminster in London. A professor of international relations, he is the author of monographs titled, Geopolitical Exotica: Tibet in Western Imagination, Tibet: A Victim of Geopolitics, and, Hindu Nationalism in India and the Politics of Fear. He has also spoken about, and published extensively on varied topics, including postcolonial politics and international relations, Tibet, China-India border dispute, Hindu nationalism, Islamophobia, and, colonial practices of postcolonial states. He is the Co-Chair of Westminster's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee and the Chair of London Higher's EDI Network. He is on twitter @dibyeshanand About the Chair Tshering Chonzom Bhutia is Advisor and In-charge at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA). She is also Associate Editor with the India Quarterly journal. Prior to this, Tshering was an Associate Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies. She received her PhD in Chinese Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, in 2014. She has been a recipient of a ICSSR Project, and a China India Scholar-Leaders Initiative (CISLI) Fellow. She has also received other short-term fellowships in China, US and, Taiwan. Tshering has about two decades of expertise in research, policy advice, editing and programme coordination. Her areas of interest include negotiation theory and conflict resolution, the Tibet issue, and internationalization strategies of India, China, and select countries in the Asia Pacific region (through the lens of higher education cooperation). She has written and spoken on these issues at various national and international forums.

About the Speaker Dr. Shamshad Ahmad Khan is Visiting Associate Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies. He is also an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, UAE. He has recently concluded his term as a Visiting scholar at Waseda Institute of Advanced Studies, Waseda University. He completed his Ph.D. in International Relations from the Japanese Studies Division at the School of International Studies, JNU, New Delhi. He was associated with various Indian and Japanese research institutes including ICWA, MP-IDSA, Keio Research Institute, Japan Institute of International Affairs, Institute of Developing Economies, and Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, Hokkaido. He received the Nakasone Yasuhiro award in 2011 from the International Institute of Policy Studies, Tokyo for his research on Japan-India relations. Besides journal articles and book chapters, he has also authored a book on India-Japan Relations titled, Changing Dynamics of India-Japan Relations: Buddhism to Strategic Partnership (Pentagon Press, 2017). About the Chair Dr. Srabani Roy Choudhury is a Professor in Japanese Studies at the Centre for East Asian Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Prior to joining JNU, she was a faculty in International Management Institute. Her association with Japan began with Japan Foundation Fellowship 1996-1997. She has been on visiting scholar programme to Keizai Koho Centre, Ministry of Economics and Industry, Japan, Policy Research Institute, Ministry of Finance, Japan, Kobe University, Nagoya University and Keio University. Her recent publications deal with economic diplomacy between Japan and India and India-Japan relations from the perspective of the power dynamics in Indo-Pacific region. Professor William H. Nienhauser, Jr. William H. Nienhauser, Jr. 倪豪士 (b. 1943) is married with two children and three grand children. He majored in Chinese literature at Indiana University and Bonn University receiving his Ph.D in 1973 under Professor Liu Wuji 柳無忌. Nienhauser was a founding editor of Chinese Literature: Essays, Articles, Reviews (CLEAR) and served the journal until 2013 as co-editor. He has held grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Japan Foundation, the Fulbright Program, the German Research Foundation, Committee on Scholarly Communication with China, the Center for Advanced Studies (Munich), and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Dr. Wenjing Gao has recently completed her Ph.D. under the guidance of Professor Jeremy Paltiel at Carleton University in Canada. Her doctoral research focused on the Belt and Road Initiatives, using this as a lens to explore India’s approach to dealing with China within the wider context of ongoing border disputes and China’s increasing global prominence. She maintains a keen interest in areas such as Indian foreign policy, Indian politics, nationalism, identity formation, and critical International Relations theory. Prior to her doctoral work, she received a MA in Politics and International Relations from Mahatma Gandhi University in India. Prof. Manish is Professor and Dean, School of International Studies, Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar (Gujarat, India). Tamar Groswald Ozery is an assistant professor in the Department of Asian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and a scholar of both law and contemporary China. Her research and teaching focus on the legal and political elements that shape the development of the Chinese market, with a particular interest in enterprise organization, capital market formation, party-state market relations, and China’s integration into the global economy. Before joining Hebrew University, she spent three years as a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard Law School Program on Corporate Governance, where she was the editor of the Harvard Law Forum on Corporate Governance and an affiliated scholar with the East Asian Legal Studies program. She holds an LLM and SJD from the University of Michigan. Before her academic career, she spearheaded the China department of a leading Israeli law firm. About the Speaker Dr. Justin Joseph currently works with GITAM School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Hyderabad. Before joining GITAM, he headed the Department of Political Science, School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), Chennai, India since its inception in 2020 until May 2023. He earned his PhD in Politics and International Relations from IIT Madras, and was awarded the “General Scholar Fellowship” by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, for conducting PhD fieldwork in China from September 2017 to July 2018. He was a visiting scholar at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) and Shanghai University in 2016 and 2017, respectively. He was conferred with the Pre-Doctoral Fellowship by IIT Madras for the early submission of his PhD thesis in 2020. His research areas include non-western IR theories and environmental security in the Global South. He has published his works in China Report, Environment Development and Sustainability, Risk Hazards and Crisis in Public Policy and Fudan Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences etc. He is also a Co-Principal Investigator of an ongoing ICSSR funded research project on the economy-ecology dichotomy in India and China. About the Chair Dr. Joe Thomas Karackattu is an Associate Professor at the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. He was “Fox Fellow (2008-09)” at Yale University, “Centenary Visiting Fellow” (2013; nominated award) at SOAS, University of London and “CISLI Fellow” (2017-19), at the India China Institute at the New School, New York. Those 4 Years is his latest work which has been screened at Penn State University, University of Pittsburgh, the New School (NYC), the India International Centre (IIC), and Ashoka University. Yuko Nishitani is a professor of international private and business law at Kyoto University in Japan. She was a global professor at NYU School of Law in spring 2023, and also has been a visiting professor at Duke and in Zurich, Lausanne, Brescia, Louvain-la-Neuve, Tel Aviv, and Taiwan. Professor Nishitani is a titular member of the International Academy of Comparative Law. She was a director of studies (English) and lecturer (French) at the Hague Academy of International Law and is its vice-president since May 2023. She served on several Legislative Committees in Japan and represented the Japanese government at the Hague Conference on Private International Law. Linda Silberman is the Clarence D. Ashley professor of law emerita at NYU School of Law. Her scholarship covers a wide variety of domestic and transnational subject areas: conflict of laws, domestic and comparative procedure, transnational litigation (in particular judicial jurisdiction and judgments recognition), international arbitration, and international child abduction. About the Chair Amb. Vijay K. Nambiar joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1967. He studied Chinese in Hong Kong, and served in China from 1970-72 and returned to South Block and Udyog Bhavan where he remained until 1976. He then served as First Secretary in Tito's Yugoslavia. He was posted from 1979 to 1982 in the Indian Mission at the United Nations (UN) in New York and served in Delhi during the 1983 NAM Summit and after. From 1985 to 1987, he was India's Ambassador in Algeria. He returned to Delhi as Joint Secretary East Asia in the MEA in 1987 and helped prepare for Rajiv Gandhi's historic visit to China in 1988. Subsequently, he served as India's Ambassador/ High Commissioner in Afghanistan (1990-1992), Malaysia (1993-1996), China (1996-2000), Pakistan (2000-2001) and Permanent Representative to the UN in New York (2002-2004). Post-retirement, he served as Deputy National Security Adviser of India (2004-2006). He was then deputed by the Government of India to serve in the United Nations Secretariat as Under Secretary-General, Special Adviser to Secretary-General Kofi Annan (2006-2007), then as Chef de Cabinet to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (2007-2012) and later as Adviser on Myanmar (2012-2016).

Virendra Sahai Verma is an army veteran and Honorary Fellow, Institute of Chinese Studies Delhi. He has served in the Indian Army for 35 years. He holds master’s degree in Defence Studies from Madras University and Commerce from Rajasthan University, an MBA, and a graduation from Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Tamil Nadu. Besides presenting several papers at seminars, Verma has published numerous articles on issues relating to India-China relations, Tibet, border studies, Sino-Pak relations, role of soldiers in peace-making, maritime security, etc. Most of his writings focus on dispute resolution. Bai Tongdong is the Dongfang Chair Professor of Philosophy at Fudan University in China and a Visiting Professor at the Global Law School NYU Shanghai. He holds a BSc in Nuclear Physics and MA in Philosophy of Science, from Peking University, and then he completed his PhD in Philosophy from Boston University. Before joining Fudan, he was a tenured Associate Professor of Philosophy, Xavier University, Cincinnati. His research interests include Chinese philosophy and political philosophy, especially the comparative and contemporary relevance of traditional Chinese political philosophy. He is the author of several books including《旧邦新命: 古今中西参照下的古典儒家政治哲学》 (Jiù bāng xīn mìng: Gǔjīn zhōngxī cānzhào xià de gǔdiǎn rújiā zhèngzhì zhéxué A New Mission of an Old State: The Comparative and Contemporary Relevance of Classical Confucian Political Philosophy) published by Peking University Press in 2009, and China: The Political Philosophy of the Middle Kingdom published by Zed Books in 2012. Bai is the director of an English-based MA, Visiting Student, and Auditing program in Chinese philosophy that intends to promote the studies of Chinese philosophy in the world. He delivers lectures in Chinese and English at different venues, and is also involved in other social activities and organizations, all of which aim to promote new political norms that draw their resources from traditional Chinese philosophy and are informed by comparative philosophy and political theories.

Dr. Fang Xu is an urban sociologist with expertise in language, cultural identity, and public policies in urban China. Her other research interests are urban studies, consumption, nationalism, and migration. She holds the position of Continuing Lecturer in the Interdisciplinary Studies program at University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of the book, Silencing Shanghai: Language and Identity in Urban China, which was published in 2021. About the Chair Dr. Anand P. Krishnan is a Fellow at the Centre of Excellence for Himalayan Studies, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, Delhi National Capital Region, and a Visiting Associate Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi. He is an Emeritus Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi. About the Chair Prof. Sabaree Mitra is Professor of Chinese and Chairperson of the Centre for Chinese and South East Asian Studies in the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies in Jawaharlal Nehru University; an Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi, and a member of the Editorial Board of China Report. Her teaching and research have spanned the fields of contemporary Chinese literature and criticism, Chinese cultural history, gender issues, and India–China cultural relations and regional interaction. Her latest publication, an edited volume titled, China's May Fourth Movement: New Narratives and Perspectives, was published by Routledge earlier this year as a global edition. Sabaree Mitra was the Chairperson of the Indian Expert Group that compiled the Encyclopedia of India-China Cultural Contacts (2014) under the aegis of the Governments of India and China. In 2017, she was honoured with the Special Book Award of China for her contributions in introducing, translating, and publishing books on Chinese culture as well as in promoting cultural exchanges.

Dr. Tilak Jha is currently an Associate Professor of Journalism at Times School of Media, Bennett University. He is former BBC Monitoring China Lead and Ex-Asian Future Leaders Scholar. He teaches papers on journalism to undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students and offers an open elective titled, "Inside China: An Indian Perspective" to engineering, management and law graduates. Dr. Jha has nearly a dozen book chapters to his credit and is a regular contributor to media, foreign relations and policy forums. He is also the Principal Investigator of a major project on water, community and technology dimensions, and is currently a Guest Editor of Springer Nature Collection on the theme of Water, Society and Governance: Local and Global Dimensions. His most recent publication is a chapter titled, "Covid-19 Wave Two: The Disinformation Challenge" (2023) in Antara Choudhury and Jayanti Dutta (eds), How India Coped with the Second Wave of COVID-19, Cambridge Scholars Publishing. About the Chair Dr. Usha Chandran is an Assistant Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University and Honorary Fellow, at the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi. She holds a PhD in Chinese on Gender issues in China from JNU. Her major research interests include gender issues in China and comparison with India, interface between gender and language as well as popular culture, women’s subjectivity in literature, and exploring Sociological methodologies to study the Chinese society. Major publications include book chapters and journal articles. She is currently working on an authored book titled, Gender Discrimination at Work in Urban China, and an edited volume titled, Gender in Language and Expression.

Peter J. Hudson has recently defended his PhD thesis at the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi. His doctoral research was on the Political Economy of the Japanese Nuclear Energy Sector. Currently, he is a Researcher at the Institute of Global International Relations, Tokyo. Peter was also a Visiting Researcher at the SIPEB, Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo until 2021. He was a recipient of Japan Foundation PhD Research Fellowship in 2016-17. Earlier he worked at the ICS as a Research Associate and Programme Co-ordinator from 2011-2015. Peter also holds an M. Phil. in East Asian Studies from the University of Delhi and a Masters in International Management (MIM) from the School of International Studies, Pondicherry University. About the Chair Shamshad Ahmad Khan is Visiting Associate Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies. He is also an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, UAE. Presently he is in Tokyo as a Visiting scholar at Waseda Institute of Advanced Studies, Waseda University. He completed his Ph.D. in International Relations from the Japanese Studies Division at the School of International Studies, JNU, New Delhi. He was associated with various Indian and Japanese research institutes including ICWA, MP-IDSA, Keio Research Institute, Japan Institute of International Affairs, Institute of Developing Economies, and Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, Hokkaido. Mr. Sang-Woo Lim is the Deputy Chief of Mission, Korean Embassy, New Delhi. Minister Lim began his career as Foreign Service Officer in 1996. He has served in multiple Korean missions abroad, including the United States, Iraq (Erbil Office), the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Brazil. He has also served as Korea’s first resident Ambassador to the Republic of Madagascar from 2018 to 2020. Prior to coming to India, Minister Lim served as Director-General of North American Affairs Bureau. He also served concurrently as the Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific Strategy Task Force and was in charge of drafting Korea’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. Korea’s Indo-Pacific Strategy was announced in December 2022. Minister Lim holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Seoul National University, and a Master in Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) from Georgetown University. In addition to his native tongue, Korean, he speaks English, and French, and is learning Hindi. About the Chair Dr Jitendra Uttam (Ph.D., Seoul National University) is currently Assistant Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Ms. Neha Mishra is an Associate Fellow (Indo-Pacific Group) at the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS). She is doing her PhD from University of Delhi on ‘The Interplay of Political Economy and Clean Technologies: Scrutinizing India-China Geo-economic Engagement’. Her research interests include the analysis of developing variables that play a crucial role in the national and global energy transition and their impact on the geopolitical and geo-economic equations between countries, such as critical minerals, rare earth elements, renewables, and so on. As a research associate, she is working on a book project titled ‘Strategic Use of Rare Earth Elements: Major Powers and Emerging Players’. She has penned analytical views on growing agreements and transactions between nations for the supply chain resilience of critical minerals and rare earth elements, primarily between India, the United States, Australia, Japan, Myanmar, and Malaysia, among others. She has published three chapters on rare earth related topics. She was the associate editor of Diplomacy in Turmoil: A Year of Turbulence, ADR 2022. About the Chair Mr. Ravi Bhoothalingam is Founder and Chairman of Manas Advisory, a Consultancy practice focusing on Top Management Coaching. He is an Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi. He holds a Master’s degree in Experimental Psychology from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University, where he was guided by Joseph Needham, the reputed scientist and Sinologist. Ravi also holds an AMP from Harvard Business School. Ravi has travelled extensively in China and its neighbourhood, and has led expeditions across Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Mongolia and Myanmar. About the Speaker Colonel (Retired) Ajai Shukla is a journalist who writes mainly for the national daily, Business Standard, on defence and strategic affairs, international relations and the defence economy. His articles also appear in The New York Times, Guardian, BBC, Al Jazeera and other international publications. Ajai Shukla also hosts a strategic affairs blog, Broadsword (ajaishukla.blogspot.com). Before joining Business Standard, he worked with NDTV from 2001-2008 as a prime time news anchor and war correspondent. He reported on the insurgencies in India’s northeastern states and in Jammu & Kashmir. He remains a frequent commentator on news television and the web media. Before taking up journalism, Ajai served more than two decades as a combat soldier in the Indian army, retiring as a colonel after commanding a tank regiment. He graduated from the National Defence Academy, Kharakvasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. Speaker Dr. Prashant Kumar Singh is a Research Fellow and Centre Coordinator of the East Asia Centre at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA). Sugandha’s recently submitted MPhil dissertation is titled Making of Chinese Political Propaganda Posters (1949-1976). She is currently enrolled in a PhD programme, where she is looking at the visual culture during the Mao period - focusing on art production, and the histories of its collection and exhibition (in Shanghai, Hongkong and the US). His research interests are China-Tibet ties, study of religion and politics in the Himalayas, and Tibetan democracy in exile. He has published several chapters in edited volumes, and journals. He has also edited a volume titled Changes on the Roof of the World – Reflections on Tibet published in 2016 by Pentagon Press, New Delhi. About the Chair Swargajyoti Gohain is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Ashoka University. She has a PhD in Anthropology from Emory University, U.S.A., and Bachelors, Masters, and M.Phil. degrees in Sociology from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University. Her monograph Imagined Geographies in the Indo-Tibetan Borderlands is a study of cultural politics and transborder spatial imaginations among the Tibetan Buddhist Monpa communities in Arunachal Pradesh. Her research interests include the anthropology of state and borders, culture and politics, development and infrastructure, and Tibetan Buddhist communities in the Indian Himalayan region. She has fieldwork experience in Northeast India and the Himalaya. Her current project is a study of contemporary Tibetan Buddhist educational and monastic institutions and networks in India. She has a second research project which broadly probes the relation between culture, politics, and ecology in the Himalaya

Barnali Chanda is a Visiting Research Associate at the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi. She completed her PhD in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Barnali’s PhD thesis is a comparative thematic study of selected strange and fantastic narratives of Pre-Modern China and India. Currently she is a China Studies Post Doctoral Research Fellow at Ashoka University. Since 2014 she has taught Literature and Chinese Language in Jadavpur University, Techno India University and Christ University. Her field of interests includes comparative literature, travelogue studies, Chinese and Indian literary transactions in the classical period, reception of Buddhist ideas in the Chinese and Sanskrit ‘marvellous’ stories and translation of Chinese classical and vernacular literature into English and Bengali. Barnali has co-authored two books, Of Asian Lands: A View from Bengal (An Annotated Bibliography of a Century of Travel Narratives to Asian Lands in Bangla) published by Jadavpur University in 2009 and Tellings and Retellings: Strange tales of Medieval China, published by Jadavpur University in 2015. She published articles in Journal of Comparative Indian Language & Literature and Asian Studies Journal of Netaji Institute of Asian Studies. About the Chair Sabaree Mitra is Professor of Chinese and Chairperson of the Centre for Chinese and South East Asian Studies in the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies in Jawaharlal Nehru University; an Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi, and a member of the Editorial Board of China Report. Her teaching and research have spanned the fields of contemporary Chinese literature and criticism, Chinese cultural history, gender issues, and India–China cultural relations and regional interaction. Her publications include books and research articles including, Literature and Politics in 20th Century China: Issues and Themes (2005), “From ‘Popularization of Culture’ to ‘Popular Culture’: Discourse & Praxis in China” (JSL, Spring 2008), and numerous book chapters. Her latest publication, an edited volume titled, China's May Fourth Movement: New Narratives and Perspectives, was published by Routledge earlier this year as a global edition. Sabaree Mitra was the Chairperson of the Indian Expert Group that compiled the Encyclopedia of India-China Cultural Contacts (2014) under the aegis of the Governments of India and China. In 2017, she was honoured with the Special Book Award of China for her contributions in introducing, translating, and publishing books on Chinese culture as well as in promoting cultural exchanges.

Govind Kelkar is a feminist scholar, with a PhD in the political economy of China. She is a Visiting Professor, Council for Social Development and Institute for Human Development, India. She is the Executive Director, GenDev Centre for Research and Innovation, India, and was a Senior Adviser, Landesa, Seattle, USA (May 2013-March 2020). In concurrent assignments, Kelkar was the International Research Coordinator of ENERGIA International, The Netherlands and Research Lead on Gender and Energy at Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai. She is a Distinguished Adjunct Faculty of Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. Kelkar has the position of Honorary Professor in Institute of Ethnology, Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences, China, and Adjunct Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi. She has authored 16 books and numerous scholarly publications. Her recent book is titled, Witch Hunts: Culture, Patriarchy and Structural Transformation (co-authored), Cambridge University Press, 2020. About the Chair Patricia Uberoi is an Emeritus Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS), Delhi. She served as the Chairperson of the Institute of Chinese Studies from 2015-2021. A sociologist by training, Uberoi has taught Sociology at the University of Delhi and the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and retired as Professor of Social Change and Development at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi. Her research interests centre on aspects of family, kinship, gender, popular culture and social policy in respect to both India and China. In addition to her monograph on themes of family, kinship and marriage through various genres of Indian popular culture (Freedom and Destiny: Gender, Family and Popular Culture in India, 2006), she has edited Family, Kinship and Marriage in India (1993), Social Reform, Sexuality and the State (1996), Tradition, Pluralism and Identity (co-ed., 1999), Anthropology in the East: Founders of Indian Sociology and Anthropology (co-ed., 2007), Marriage, Migration and Gender (co-ed., 2008). Her most recent publication is the 4-volume Asian Families and Intimacies (co-ed. with Ochiai Emiko, 2021), a compendium of original translations from Asian languages, in which she had sourced and edited Part III, Transforming Asian Sexualities.

Professor Jenny Huangfu Day (Skidmore College) Jenny Huangfu Day is an associate professor of history and the Francis Tang ‘61 Chair of China Studies at Skidmore College, NY. Joe Thomas Karackattu is an Associate Professor at the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. He was “Fox Fellow (2008-09)” at Yale University, “Centenary Visiting Fellow” (2013; nominated award) at SOAS, University of London and “CISLI Fellow” (2017-19), at the India China Institute at the New School, New York. “Those 4 Years” is his latest work which has been screened at Penn State University, University of Pittsburgh, the New School (NYC), the India International Centre (IIC), and Ashoka University. His first film, also non-fiction, titled “Guli’s Children” (2016), has also been screened at the NUS (Singapore), Duke University, NYU, University of Copenhagen, Beijing, Shanghai, New Delhi and several universities across India. Dr. Karackattu was the recipient of the “Young Faculty Recognition Award 2020” at IIT Madras. He studied Economics at St. Stephen's College (Delhi) and Chinese Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (Delhi). About the Chair Ravi Bhoothalingam is currently Founder and Chairman of Manas Advisory, a Consultancy practice focusing on Top Management Coaching. He is an Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi. He holds a Master’s degree in Experimental Psychology from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University and also has an AMP from Harvard Business School. He has travelled extensively in China and its neighbourhood, and has led expeditions across Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Mongolia and Myanmar. He is also a member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Core Group on China and on the Editorial Boards of China Report and World Affairs. His interests cover the history of China and practice of Confucianism, Sino-Indian business and economic ties. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London. Shantanu Roy-Chaudhury is a Research Associate at the Institute of Chinese Studies with an interest in China’s relations with the South Asian region. Shantanu is the author of The China Factor: Beijing's Expanding Engagement with Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, and Myanmar (Routledge, 2023). The book examines China’s political, economic, and defence relations with the four nations and weighs the dividends of the bilateral relationships to better comprehend the geopolitical subtleties in the region, along with the implications for India. He was previously a Research Associate at the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS), and has also worked at the United Service Institution of India (USI). Shantanu has an M.Phil. from the University of Oxford (St. Antony's College), where he focused on the International Relations of South Asia, and a Bachelor’s degree in History from Hindu College, University of Delhi. About the Chair Ashok K. Kantha is an Honorary Fellow and former Director (2017- 22) of the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi; a Distinguished Fellow at Vivekananda International Foundation, New Delhi; and Chair of the Core Group on China of the Confederation of Indian Industry. A career diplomat, Kantha was Ambassador of India to China until January 2016. Prior to this, he was Secretary (East) at Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi with responsibility for about 65 countries in India’s extended neighbourhood. His previous assignments include High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka and Malaysia, Consul General in Hong Kong, and Deputy Chief of Mission in Kathmandu (Nepal). Earlier, Kantha served in different capacities at Indian Missions in Singapore, China and the USA, and at headquarters in New Delhi. In his diplomatic career spanning over 38 years, Kantha specialized in India’s neighbourhood and Asian affairs, with a particular focus on China. Apart from three assignments in China, he served as Joint Secretary (East Asia) and Director (China) at Ministry of External Affairs for periods of four years each. He has an advanced certificate in Chinese language from National University of Singapore.

Our Speakers: Keynote Speaker: Ryan Hass Ryan Hass is a senior fellow and the Michael H. Armacost Chair in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings, where he holds a joint appointment to the John L. Thornton China Center and the Center for East Asia Policy Studies. He is also the Chen-Fu and Cecilia Yen Koo Chair in Taiwan Studies. He was part of the inaugural class of David M. Rubenstein fellows at Brookings, and is a nonresident affiliated fellow in the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale Law School. Hass focuses his research and analysis on enhancing policy development on the pressing political, economic, and security challenges facing the United States in East Asia. From 2013 to 2017, Hass served as the director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia at the National Security Council (NSC) staff. He joined President Obama’s state visit delegations in Beijing and Washington respectively in 2014 and 2015, and the president’s delegation to Hangzhou, China, for the G-20 in 2016, and to Lima, Peru, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meetings in 2016. Prior to joining NSC, Hass served as a Foreign Service Officer in U.S. Embassy Beijing, where he earned the State Department Director General’s award for impact and originality in reporting. Hass also served in Embassy Seoul and Embassy Ulaanbaatar, and domestically in the State Department Offices of Taiwan Coordination and Korean Affairs. Hass received multiple Superior Honor and Meritorious Honor commendations during his 15-year tenure in the Foreign Service. Speaker: Marie Anchordoguy Marie Anchordoguy is a professor in the Jackson School of International Studies and specializes in the political economy of Japan. She is Chair of the UW and Jackson School Japan Studies Programs and currently holds the George Long Endowed Professorship. Her research has focused primarily on the key institutions and policies of Japan’s capitalist system, especially in its high-tech industries, including semiconductors. She is currently researching the political economy of entrepreneurship, venture capital, and high-tech start-ups in Japan. She teaches several comparative courses, such as “Science, Technology, and Innovation Policies in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China”. She received her undergraduate, MBA, and PhD in Business Administration degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. Speaker: Director General Daniel K.C. Chen Daniel Kuo-ching Chen is currently Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Seattle. Prior to this, he was Deputy Secretary-General of the Taiwan Council for U.S. Affairs (TCUSA) seconded to Foreign Minister’s Office. D.G. Chen served as Deputy Director in the Political Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in the United States. He also served the Section Chief in the Department of Northern American Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Republic of China (Taiwan) and was awarded the Model Civil Servant of MOFA in 2011. D.G. Chen served Senior Consular Officer in Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Seattle as well. He was a platoon leader as a second lieutenant in the Army of ROC and was awarded Excellent Mandatory Service Officer in 1997. D.G Chen earned a Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) with an International Business Diplomacy (IBD) honorary certificate from Georgetown University in 2000 and Bachelor of Arts with valedictorian in Diplomacy from National Chengchi University, Taiwan in 1995. Speaker: Suresh Kotha Suresh Kotha is a professor of management at the Foster School of Business, University of Washington, where he holds the Olesen/Battelle Endowed Excellence Chair in Entrepreneurship. He joined the Foster Business School in 1996 and teaches courses in competitive strategy and entrepreneurship in the school's Executive MBA and TMMBA programs. He also participates in many of the executive programs that are focused on domestic and international companies offered by Foster. He is the Arthur W. Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship research director and co-founded the West Coast Research Symposium on Technology Entrepreneurship. Speaker: Jon Hodowany Jon Hodowany is the president and general manager of JC Grand, a Taiwan-based company that designs, manufactures, exports and distributes precision steel forgings to industrial customers worldwide. During the past decade, JC Grand has grown its manufacturing capabilities and client distribution footprint, especially in North America and the EU, to become one of the largest private companies in Taiwan at nearly USD 200 million in sales revenue in 2022. Jon, a native of San Diego, studied mechanical engineering and quantitative economics at the University of California, San Diego, graduating with a BS degree in 1992. He graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 1997 with a PhD in aeronautics and mechanical engineering, and a language minor in Chinese. Between 1997 and 2005, Jon and his wife Judy resided in Seattle, with Jon working as a principal engineer and manager at the Boeing Tech Center in Bellevue, and later at two biotechnology start-ups focused on large-scale gene expression lab automation during the most exciting early years of the Human Genome Project. From 2000 to 2003, Jon also enrolled and completed (part-time) the graduate business curriculum at the University of Washington, earning an MBA from the Foster School of Business in 2003. Speaker: Tina Chen Tina Chen has 20 years of substantial commercial experience with major corporate businesses like Tommy Bahama, Zara, Coach, and Swarovski across Asia and America with skills covering merchandising, product development, and sourcing. She has an in-depth understanding of the flexible supply chain needed to support modern retail from the factory to the customer. About the Speaker Dokku Nagamalleswara Rao is a Research Assistant at the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) in New Delhi, India, where his research focuses on China, East Asia, and the Indo-Pacific region. He is also currently pursuing his PhD as a Doctoral Fellow at Shandong University in the People’s Republic of China, having received the prestigious Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) scholarship from the Indian government and the Chinese Government Scholarship for 2018-2023. Rao’s PhD thesis, titled “Strategic Culture Influence on China’s Approaches to International Security and Order”, is a culmination of his extensive research on the topic. In addition, he was selected as a G20 Fellow by the Centre for Financial Accountability in New Delhi. About the Chair Manoj Kewalramani is the chairperson of the Indo-Pacific Research Programme and a China studies fellow at The Takshashila Institution, a leading Indian public policy education center. His research interests include Chinese politics, foreign policy, approaches to new technologies, and addressing questions of how India can work with like-minded partners to deal with the challenges presented by China's rise. Manoj is the author of Smokeless War: China’s Quest for Geopolitical Dominance (Bloomsbury India, 2021), which discusses China’s political, diplomatic, economic, and narrative responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. He also writes a weekly newsletter, Eye on China, which tracks developments in China from an Indian perspective, and a daily newsletter analyzing news coverage and discourse in the People's Daily.

Prashant Kaushik is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Chinese Studies, Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. Prior to this, he taught at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi. He holds an M.A. Chinese and an M.Phil. degree from the Centre for Chinese and South-East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He also holds a B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. degree in History from Hindu College, University of Delhi. He has been associated with the compilation of the Encyclopedia of India-China Cultural Contacts under the aegis of the Governments of India and China. He has written several book chapters and his articles have appeared in journals like India Quarterly and China Report. Currently, he is also pursuing PhD from the School of International Studies, Central University of Gujarat. Christian Uhl has studied Japanese Studies and Chinese Studies at the University of Frankfurt am Main and the University of Heidelberg (both in Germany), the Nihon University (at Mishima, Japan) and the Shanghai Waiguoyu Daxue (China). He holds an MA (highest distinction), and a PhD (D.Phil., summa cum laude, 2001) from the Ruprecht Karls University (Heidelberg). For his doctoral thesis, “Takeuchi Yoshimi’s interpretation of the life and work of Lu Xun,” he was awarded the JaDe-Award of 2003. In 2007, he was appointed as a professor for Japanese Studies at Ghent University. Uhl's research focuses on themes in intellectual history and philosophy in Japan and – sometimes - China, from 2006, increasingly from a Marxian perspective. Among his recent publications is the essay, “Ideology, Quixotism, or Enabling Utopia? The Notion of Tianxia as a Model for a New Form of Global Governance and Coexistence, Seen in the Light of the Japanese Experience”. Natasha Nongbri teaches at the Department of History, Janki Devi Memorial College, University of Delhi, India. She completed her doctorate from the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her areas of interest include environmental history, history of commodities, socio-economic history of India and the history of modern China and Japan. Some of her publications include “‘Plants Out of Place’: The ‘Noxious Weeds’ Eradication Campaign in Colonial South India” (Indian Economic and Social History Review, 2016) and “Representing Tea, Creating Consumers: Tea Advertising in Late Colonial India”, in T. Nongbri and R. Bhargava (eds.), Materiality and Visuality in North East India: An Interdisciplinary Perspective (Springer, 2021). About the Chair & Moderator Sabaree Mitra is Professor of Chinese and Chairperson of the Centre for Chinese and South East Asian Studies in the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies in Jawaharlal Nehru University; an Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi, and a member of the Editorial Board of China Report. Her teaching and research have spanned the fields of contemporary Chinese literature and criticism, Chinese cultural history, gender issues, and India–China cultural relations and regional interaction. Her publications include books and research articles including, Literature and Politics in 20th Century China: Issues and Themes (2005), “From ‘Popularization of Culture’ to ‘Popular Culture’: Discourse & Praxis in China” (JSL, Spring 2008), and numerous book chapters. Her latest publication, an edited volume titled, China's May Fourth Movement: New Narratives and Perspectives, was published by Routledge earlier this year as a global edition. Sabaree Mitra was the Chairperson of the Indian Expert Group that compiled the Encyclopedia of India-China Cultural Contacts (2014) under the aegis of the Governments of India and China. In 2017, she was honoured with the Special Book Award of China for her contributions in introducing, translating, and publishing books on Chinese culture as well as in promoting cultural exchanges.

Wing-Shing Tang was formerly Professor at the Department of Geography and Research Fellow at Advanced Institute for Contemporary China Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University, China. With a PhD from Cambridge University, and M.Sc. in Urban and Regional Planning from University of Toronto, he is widely published to interrogate urban theories in China, with special emphasis on town-country relations. Some of his questions include, what is urban ideology in China? How to contextualize it? Are debates about the differentiation between the city and urbanization relevant to China? How can one interpret China’s town-country relations, within the politics and administration of the Chinese state? Solomon Benjamin is presently faculty at IIT Madras’s Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. With PhD from MIT’s Department of Urban Studies, his work has focused on the triangulate: the varied logics of land whose tenurial spatialities conceived as situated histories are explored around the concept of Occupancy Urbanism; an entanglement of state spaces producing urban terrains beyond rationale of Master Planning; and, how these two realms interconnect with the materiality of economy of mostly small firms as a ‘Neighbourhood as Factory’; explored earlier in electrical cables and conductors, silk, machine tools, and more recently, in terms of the trans-national connect to Shenzhen in smartphone re-engineering and refurbishment. About the Chair Ritu Agarwal is an Associate Professor at Centre for East Asian Studies, School of International Studies, JNU. She holds a Ph.D. in Chinese Studies from the University of Delhi, and an M.A. in Political Science, from JNU. Her doctoral work explored the micro-level agrarian transformation in Yunnan province, and she is currently engaged in questions of provincial transformation, especially in Yunnan. Her research interests are rural political economy, urbanization, gender studies and provincial politics. Speaker: Dr. Dawn Murphy joined the National War College as an Associate Professor of National Security Strategy in 2022. Prior to joining NWC, her academic appointments included Associate Professor of International Security Studies at Air War College, Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science at George Washington University, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Princeton (Columbia)-Harvard China and the World Program at Princeton University. Murphy specializes in Chinese foreign policy and domestic politics, US-China relations, and international relations. Her research analyzes China’s interests and behavior as a rising global power towards the existing international order. She examines China’s relations with the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa in her book China’s Rise in the Global South: The Middle East, Africa, and Beijing’s Alternative World Order (Stanford University Press, 2022). It analyzes China’s foreign policy approach towards the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa regionally (e.g., political, economic, military, and foreign aid) and through detailed case studies of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum (CASCF), the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the China-Middle East Issues Special Envoy, the China-Africa Issues Special Envoy, China’s Special Envoy for Syria, China’s naval base in Djibouti, and China’s Belt and Road initiative. Dr. Murphy holds a B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University, Master of International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, and Ph.D. in Political Science from George Washington University. Discussant: David Shambaugh is an internationally recognized authority and award-winning author on contemporary China and the international relations of Asia. He is the Gaston Sigur Professor of Asian Studies, Political Science & International Affairs, and the founding Director of the China Policy Program in the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University. He previously served in the Department of State and on the National Security Council staff during the Carter administration (1977-1979). From 1996-2016 he was also a Nonresident Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program at The Brookings Institution. Professor Shambaugh was previously Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Reader in Chinese Politics at the University of London’s School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), 1987-1996, where he also served as Editor of The China Quarterly. Moderator: Gregg A. Brazinsky works on U.S.-East Asian relations and East Asian international history. He is interested in the flow of commerce, ideas, and culture among Asian countries and across the Pacific. He is proficient in Mandarin Chinese and Korean. He is the author of two books: Winning the Third World (2017), which focuses on Sino-American Rivalry in the Third World and Nation Building in South Korea (2007), which explores U.S.-South Korean relations during the Cold War. Currently, he is working on two other book projects. The first examines American nation-building in Asia during the Cold War. The second explores Sino-North Korean relations between 1949 and 1992 and focuses specifically on the development of cultural and economic ties between the two countries. He has received numerous fellowships to support his research including the Kluge Fellowship from the Library of Congress, the Smith Richardson Foundation junior faculty fellowship, and a fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson Center. Professor Brazinsky also currently serves as the director of the George Washington Cold War Group. As director of the Asian Studies Program, Professor Brazinsky has attracted some of the brightest students from around the country and the world who share a commitment to pursuing careers related to Asia. He helped to launch a special mentoring program for Asian Studies MA students and has worked to expand fellowship and professional opportunities for students in the program.

Mr. Atul Aneja is the Editor of India Narrative. He was formerly the Strategic Affairs Editor of The Hindu newspaper and was posted in Beijing between August 2014 and January 2020 as Associate Editor (China). He was also the West Asia correspondent for The Hindu, based in Bahrain and Dubai from August 2002 to June 2014. Atul extensively field reported on the Arab Spring from Cairo, Benghazi and Tunis. Specialising in conflict zones, he had earlier reported on the Lebanon war of July/August 2006 and covered the situation emerging in Iraq after the Anglo-American Invasion. His areas of interests are geopolitics and international security and geo-economics, with focus on China and Eurasia. Dr. Andrea Ghiselli is an Assistant Professor at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs of Fudan University in Shanghai. Fang Xiaoping is an Associate Professor of Chinese Studies in the Faculty of Arts at Monash University, Australia. His research interests focus on the history of medicine, health, and epidemics in twentieth-century China and the socio-political history of Mao’s China after 1949. He is the author of Barefoot Doctors and Western Medicine in China (Rochester, NY: University of Rochester Press, 2012) and China and the Cholera Pandemic: Restructuring Society under Mao (Pittsburgh, PA: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2021). About the Chair Rama V. Baru is Professor at the Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and an Honorary Fellow, Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi, India. She is also an Honorary Professor at the India Studies Centre, Central China Normal University, Wuhan. Mr Ashok K. Kantha is an Honorary Fellow and former Director (2017- 22) of the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi; a Distinguished Fellow at Vivekananda International Foundation, New Delhi; and Chair of the Core Group on China of the Confederation of Indian Industry. A career diplomat, Kantha was the Ambassador of India to China until January 2016. Prior to this, he was Secretary (East) at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi with responsibility for about 65 countries in India’s extended neighbourhood. His previous assignments include the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka and Malaysia, the Consul General in Hong Kong, and the Deputy Chief of Mission in Kathmandu (Nepal). Earlier, Kantha served in different capacities at Indian Missions in Singapore, China and the USA, and at headquarters in New Delhi. In his diplomatic career spanning over 38 years, Kantha specialized in India’s neighbourhood and Asian affairs, with a particular focus on China. Apart from three assignments in China, he served as Joint Secretary (East Asia) and Director (China) at the Ministry of External Affairs for periods of four years each. He has an advanced certificate in the Chinese language from the National University of Singapore. About the Chair Dr Bhaswati Sarkar is a Professor at the Centre for European Studies (CES), School of International Studies, JNU. She is currently the Chairperson of the Centre. She did her graduation and post-graduation in Political Science. Her interest areas are nation, nationalism, democracy, immigration, minority rights, European integration, European identity and India-EU relations. She also keenly follows political developments in Asia particularly related to Indian foreign policy. She currently holds the Jean Monnet Chair on ‘Democracy, Diversity and European Identity in the European Union’ and was also awarded the Jean Monnet Module ‘Understanding European Integration Through the Regional Lens’. He previously served in the Department of State and on the National Security Council staff during the Carter administration (1977-1979). He has been selected for numerous awards and grants, including as a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a Senior Scholar by the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and a Senior Fulbright Scholar (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences). Dr. T. G. Suresh is an Associate Professor in the Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was previously part of the founding team at the Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC), focusing on private participation in infrastructure. In previous positions, he has been with the Export-Import Bank of India, and with the World Bank in Washington. He has been on the faculty at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur and the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi. He has published extensively, writes frequently for the national media and has also been associated with a number of government committees. Most recently, he was chair of the Working Group on Migration, Government of India and member of the High Level Railway Restructuring Committee, Ministry of Railways and of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. He also serves on the Scientific Advisory Council of LIRNEasia, Colombo. About the Speaker Dr. Sonika Gupta is an Associate Professor of Global Politics at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India. Her research interests include the Tibetan Exile Community in India, State-making in India's Himalayan Borders and Cosmopolitanism and International Relations Theory. Her research focuses on Asian borderlands and looks in particular at the intersections between capital and ecology, federalism and foreign policy, resources and rights. Dr. Kurian is a member of the External Advisory Board of the India China Institute, The New School, New York and has served on the Fellowship Committee of the China Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme, Centre for China Studies, Ashoka University. She has held Fellowships from the India China Institute, The New School, New York and the Charles Wallace India Trust. Dr. Kurian has written and published widely on alternative spatial imaginations, a theme that is explored in detail in her two books, India-China Borderlands: Conversations Beyond the Centre (Sage, 2014) and India and China: Rethinking Borders and Security (co-author) (University of Michigan Press, 2016).

Xiaogang Wu is Professor of Sociology at New York University, and Yufeng Global Professor of Social Science, Head of Social Science Area, Director of the Center for Applied Social and Economic Research (CASER) at NYU Shanghai. From 2003 to 2020, he taught at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he was Chair Professor of Social Science and Public Policy. Dr. Wu’s research interests include social stratification and mobility, education, urban sociology, survey and quantitative methods. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and now is the Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Sociological Review (2162-0555 [print]; 2162-0563 [web]).

Dr Atul Bhardwaj is currently a Fellow at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. He is an Adjunct fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies. He has been Visiting Fellow in the Department of International Politics at the City University of London, Senior Fellow at the Indian Council of Social Science Research and the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA). He holds a master’s degree in War Studies from King's College, London and a doctorate in History from Ambedkar University, Delhi. About the Chair & Discussant Prof. Siddiq Wahid earned his PhD in the field of Inner Asian and Altaic Studies at Harvard University, where he specialized in Tibetan and Central Asian Political History. He is currently a Distinguished Professor in the Department of International Relations and Governance Studies and Senior Fellow at the Centre for Excellence in Himalayan Studies at Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence Deemed University. He is also affiliated with ICS as an Adjunct Fellow and a Visiting Professor at the University of Ladakh in Leh. His other recent engagements have been that of a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Policy Research (CPR), Director of the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of Kashmir Studies at the University of Kashmir, the Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair Professor in Modern History at the University of Jammu and he was the Founding Vice Chancellor of Islamic University of Science & Technology, Jammu & Kashmir. Prof. Patricia Uberoi is an Emeritus Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS), Delhi. She served as the Chairperson of the Institute of Chinese Studies from 2015-2021. A sociologist by training, Dr Uberoi has taught Sociology at the University of Delhi and the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and retired as Professor of Social Change and Development at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi. Her research interests centre on aspects of family, kinship, gender, popular culture and social policy in respect to both India and China. In addition to her monograph on themes of family, kinship and marriage through various genres of Indian popular (Freedom and Destiny: Gender, Family and Popular Culture in India, 2006), she has edited Family, Kinship and Marriage in India (1993), Social Reform, Sexuality and the State (1996), Tradition, Pluralism and Identity (co-ed., 1999), Anthropology in the East: Founders of Indian Sociology and Anthropology (co-ed., 2007), Marriage, Migration and Gender (co-ed, 2008); Rise of the Asian Giants: Dragon-Elephant Tango (ed., 2008); and (with Kishan S. Rana), India’s North East states, the BCIM Forum and Regional Integration (Institute of Chinese Studies, 2012). At the ICS, she has been closely associated for several years with the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Forum for Regional Cooperation, a Track II dialogue focusing on development issues in the region stretching from Northeast India to Southwest China. She is also a Member of the Joint Study Group (India) for the BCIM Economic Corridor. Prof. Rama V. Baru is a Professor at the Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and an Honorary Fellow, Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi, India. She is also an Honorary Professor at the India Studies Centre, Central China Normal University, Wuhan, China. Her major areas of research interest include commercialisation of health services, infectious diseases, comparative health systems and health inequalities. She is the author of four books: Private Health Care in India: Social Characteristics and Trends (1998); School Health Services in India: The Social and Economic Contexts (2008); and Medical Insurance Schemes for the Poor: Who Benefits (2015). Her most recent publications by Routledge is a book (with Madhurima Nundy) titled Commercialisation of Medical Care in China: Changing Landscapes (2020), and co-edited volume (with Anuj Kapilashrami) titled Global Health Governance and Commercialisation in India: Actors, Institutions and the Dialectics of Global and Local (2018). She has contributed to many edited volumes and peer-reviewed journals. She is currently a member of the Ethics Committee at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Technical Appraisal Committee for Health Technology Assessment, the Department of Health Research, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and the Scientific Advisory Group, Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi. Dr. Madhurima Nundy is a Fellow in Health and Human Development at the Centre for Social and Economic Progress, New Delhi. She holds a PhD in Public Health from the Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She completed her MPhil from the same centre. Previously she was Assistant Director and Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS), Delhi (2012-21); Senior Programme Coordinator at the Public Health Resource Network, New Delhi (2009-12). Among other experiences, she was a Technical Consultant with the National Commission on Macroeconomics and Health (2004-05) and a Research Associate at the Institute of Social Studies Trust (1999-2001). Her areas of interest include studying different health service systems, health policies and inequalities in health. She has several publications to her name. The Chair Prof. Alka Acharya is the Honorary Director of the ICS and Chairperson at the Centre for East Asian Studies, SIS, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She has been teaching courses on Chinese Foreign Policy and Political Economy to Masters and M.Phil students and guiding doctoral research since 1993. She is the joint editor of the book Crossing a Bridge of Dreams: 50 years of India-China and has contributed chapters to many books and journals. She has authored a book China & India: Politics of Incremental Engagement, published in 2008 and most recently edited a volume titled Boundaries and Borderlands: A Century after the 1914 Simla Convention (Routledge, New York 2023). She was nominated by the Indian government as a member of the India-China Eminent Persons Group (2006-2008) and member of the National Security Advisory Board of the Government of India for two terms (2006-2008) and (2011-2012).

Prof. S. Chandrashekar is the JRD Tata Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies. Prior to joining NIAS he was a Professor in the Corporate Strategy and Policy Area at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB). Before moving to IIMB he spent more than 20 years working at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). His work at ISRO covered all parts of the programme - satellite, rockets as well as the applications of space technology especially remote sensing. He was also involved with activities related to international co-operation and has represented and led Indian delegations to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. His research interests at IIMB included technology and competitive advantage, national technology priorities and national technology policy, studies on innovation, telecommunications in the Indian context, national innovation systems, modelling complex systems and national security issues. His current work at NIAS covers the missile, nuclear weapons, and space domains. These include war and deterrence strategies, space weapons and space war with a special focus on China. He has also been involved with other colleagues on a number of studies on Chinese strategies relating to hi tech areas such as single crystal blade technology used in aero-engines and Rare Earths. Recent work takes a look at what India should do in space as a response to global changes in the world order that increasingly links space assets with conventional and nuclear war. He has just finished a detailed study of China’s A2AD strategy and its implications for war and deterrence in the Indo-Pacific Region. His recent publications include “Space, War, and Security – A Strategy for India”, which has been translated into Chinese and “China’s Space Programme – From the Era of Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping”, published by Springer Nature. Chair Lt. Gen. JS. Bajwa superannuated after over 39 years of service in the Army having operated in diverse active operational and counter- terrorism environments. He has been conferred with the awards of Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM) and Sena Medal (SM) for distinguished service. He has authored three books on the Chinese PLA. Currently he is the editor of the prestigious quarterly magazine- Indian Defence Review.

Youmin Xi Executive President of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, and Senior Professor of Management at Xi'an Jiaotong University. Through logical training in physics at the undergraduate level, a holistic perspective from systems engineering at the master’s level, and a humanistic approach in management at the doctoral level, Professor Xi Youmin founded the Theory of HeXie Management (1985). He led the establishment and innovative development of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (2006), with a continued dedication to management and education. He has published over 30 books, more than 300 papers, received over 10 provincial and ministerial- level awards for research achievements, supervised nearly 200 graduate students, and earned numerous national honours, including the ‘China Youth Scientist Award. ’ He also serves as Co-President of Chinese Academy of Management (CAM) and Chair of the Ministry of Education's Business Administration Education Steering Committee. Da Hsuan Feng Chairman of the International Advisory Board and Honorary Dean of the Belt and Road Research Institute at Hainan University, and Chief Advisor of China Silk iValley Research Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Minnesota and has served as Vice President for Research at the University of Texas at Dallas and other leadership roles in universities globally. A Fellow of the American Physical Society, Feng has honorary professor roles at 15 Chinese universities and is an Academic Advisor of Center for China and Globalization (CCG). He has received several prestigious awards and is a prolific author. Feng co-founded platforms like the Dialogues on Asian Universities (DAU) and “China and the World ZOOM platform” to foster global academic and cultural exchanges. Max Lu Ph.D. student in Education at Harvard University and Co-founder of Dialogues on Asian Universities (DAU) Max Lu co-founded the Dialogue on Asian Universities (DAU) in 2020 alongside Da Hsuan Feng, Tan Eng Chye, and Tony F Chan. DAU is a premier platform for university leaders to explore the challenges and opportunities in Asian higher education. Max’s research focuses on the intersection of technology, media, and learning sciences, with a particular interest in utilizing Humanistic Intelligence (HI) principles to enhance learning efficiency through technology. Prior to Harvard, Max worked on news innovations at Bloomberg LP and the Los Angeles Times. He holds a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Toronto.
