Peiyu Yang is currently a term assistant professor of Arabic at George Mason University. Her monograph Triangular Translation: Gender, Politics, and the Making of the Postcolonial World between China, Europe, and the Middle East, 1880-1940 (2023, Legenda Press) investigates how intellectuals during the Nahda (the period known as the Arab cultural renaissance) turned their attention to Chinese culture and its own anti-colonial struggle, constitutional revolution, and women’s rights. Sandy Zhang is a scholar of contemporary Chinese literature and visual arts, with a special focus on Chinese Avant-garde literature and art of the 1980s. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Chinese at Southern Utah University. Her recent articles, published in Humanities, Chinese Literature and Thought Today, Third Text, Prism, etc, examine the intellectual, literary and artistic reforms of China's 1980s. Thomas Chan is an interdisciplinary historian of modern China specializing in the intertwined histories of medicine, cultural production, political violence, and state formation. I have special interests in drugs, violence, and popular culture. My current book project, From Users to Criminals: Creating, Pathologizing, and Killing ‘Drug Criminals’ in Twentieth Century China, analyzes how from 1906 to 1953 both governments dehumanized drug users and traffickers to encourage collective identity formation and promote state-building. Professor Zhang Yang (American University) Yang Zhang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Global Inquiry at the School of International Service, American University, Washington, DC. Earning his PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Zhang’s research spans historical sociology, elite and contentious politics, and social and political theory. His work has appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, Theory and Society, Journal of Historical Sociology, and Mobilization, among other outlets. Zhang has been recognized with the Charles Tilly Article Award from the Comparative-Historical Sociology Section and an Honorable Mention for the Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Article Award from the Collective Behavior and Social Movements Section, both from the American Sociological Association.

Professor Juanjuan Peng (Georgia Southern University) Juanjuan Peng is a professor of history at Georgia Southern University with a primary research focus on Chinese business history. She is the author of The Yudahua Business Group in China’s Early Industrialization (Lanham, Maryland: Lexington Books, 2020), which traces the trajectory of a major Chinese textile enterprise from the Self-Strengthening Movement of the Late Qing to the Socialist Transformation of the early People’s Republic.

Mr Senhao Hu (The University of Hong Kong) Senhao Hu is a PhD student in the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) at The University of Hong Kong. He has a keen interest in understanding the relationship between violence and state-building in historic China.

Edyta Roszko is a Research Professor and social anthropologist at the Chr. Michelsen Institute in Bergen, Norway. She is leading the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant project Transoceanic Fishers: Multiple Mobilities in and out of the South China Sea (TransOcean) that historicizes fishing communities in relation to and beyond the nation-state, security concerns and territorially bounded fisheries. Edyta’s newly awarded ERC Consolidator Grant project Global Hydroconnectivities beyond Ocean, Seas and Rivers combines anthropology, archaeology and geohydrology and contributes to the wider discussion on global Indigenous history and its relevance in the era of climate changes. Edyta is the author of Fishers, Monks and Cadres: Navigating State, Religion and the South China Sea in Central Vietnam co-published by NIAS and the University of Hawai’i Press. Shaun Lin is Lecturer at NUS College of the National University of Singapore. Shaun's research interests are in political geography (particularly the geopolitics of Southeast Asia and China), border studies (land and maritime), environmental politics, and geography pedagogy. Shaun serves as Social Media Editor for Space and Polity, and Book Review Co-Editor for the Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Geography in Higher Education. Patricio N. Abinales retired from the Department of Asian Studies, University of Hawai'i-Manoa, in 2025. He was a visiting research fellow at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, from March to August 2025, where he was working on a book project on the University of the Philippines and the Marcos Dictatorship. Dr Joseba Estevez and Professor David Palmer (The University of Hong Kong) Joseba Estevez is a social anthropologist and Research Assistant Professor at the “Asian Religious Connections (ASIAR)” cluster of the HKIHSS, HKU. Building on more than a decade of immersive fieldwork among the Lanten Yao (Mun) communities in northern Laos’s Luang Namtha Province, Estevez’s research explores how Daoist cosmology and ritual shapes the social life of local communities. His recent research also investigates the local impacts of major infrastructure projects such as the Laos–China Railway, the development of Smart Cities, Special Economic Zones, and the broader dynamics of international cooperation agencies in mainland Southeast Asia, especially Laos and Thailand. David A Palmer (PhD, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Paris) is a Professor of anthropology jointly appointed by the HKIHSS and the Department of Sociology of HKU. He is the President of the East Asian Society for the Social Scientific Study of Religion and convenor of the HKIHSS “Asian Religious Connections” research cluster. He currently coordinates collaborative research projects on Daoism among the Yao ethnic minority in the China-Vietnam-Laos borderland, and on religious and socio-cultural entanglements between China and countries of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Professor Elijah Siegler (Professor of Religious Studies at College of Charleston) Elijah Siegler is a professor of Religious Studies at College of Charleston, a public university in South Carolina. He is the leading expert in the field of American Daoism, and has lectured and published widely on that field, including the award-winning book Dream Trippers: Global Daoism and Predicament of Modern Spirituality (University of Chicago Press, 2017, co-authored with David A. Palmer).

Dr Yuanxie Shi (University of Chicago) Yuanxie Shi is a historian of gender, labor, technology, and economics in modern China. After receiving her doctoral degree from the University of Chicago in August 2025, she has joined the Social Science Division there as a Harper-Schmidt Fellow and Collegiate Assistant Professor. Her dissertation, “Mao’s Clever Hands: Export Lacemaking and Socialist Flexibility in Cold War, 1949-1980s,” explores an uncharted history of socialist industrialization since 1949 and during the Cold War. Rather than focusing on mechanical manufacturing and factory settings, her research examines mass production through labor-intensive needlework by millions of Chinese women, specifically in rural Chaoshan region. This project reveals the subaltern status of rural women and bridges an overlooked social category in both the socialist hierarchy of values and the international division of labor.

David A. Palmer (Ph.D., Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Paris) is Professor of Anthropology, jointly appointed by the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong. His award-winning books include Qigong Fever: Body, Science and Utopia in China (Columbia University Press), The Religious Question in Modern China (University of Chicago Press, co- authored with V. Goossaert), and Dream Trippers: Global Daoism and the Predicament of Modern Spirituality (University of Chicago Press, co-authored with E. Siegler). His research focuses on the sociology and anthropology of religion and spirituality in China, civil society, and transnational interactions along China’s Belt and Road. Dr. Joseba Estévez is a social anthropologist and Research Assistant Professor at the “Asian Religious Connections” cluster, Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Hong Kong. His research interests include ritual, cosmology, exchange, animism, Daoism, and social transformation in mainland Southeast Asia. He leads the YAO DAO Project and directs digital archiving and Smart Cities research initiatives in Laos and Southeast Asia. Dr. Rundong Ning is an RGC Post-doctoral Fellow at the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. His research interests include work and labor, entrepreneurship, volunteerism, and the digital economy. His current research focuses on China-Kenya connections in the digital economy and entrepreneurship in Congo- Brazzaville. His publications appear in Current Anthropology, Economic Anthropology, American Journal of Cultural Sociology, African Studies Review, Africa, and other leading outlets.

Mr. Wang Yang (The University of Hong Kong) Wang Yang is a PhD student in Anthropology in the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) at The University of Hong Kong. His research interests encompass urban anthropology, modern Buddhism, gender studies, and volunteerism. His previous works examine temple-centered urban redevelopments in mainland China. For his PhD project, he studies with volunteer communities within Buddhist temples and tries to understand the intricate intersection between gendered experiences in a broader societal context and the religious practices of female volunteers at these temples.

Dr. Yuan Jia Zheng (International University of Catalonia) Yuan Jia Zheng (Ph.D. in Economic History) is a Lecturer with Tenure Track at the International University of Catalonia in Spain. She was the Business History Initiative Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard Business School, and was formerly Associate Lecturer at the University of Barcelona. Her research focuses on the development of the ecological and social responsibility of global business. She has looked in particular at the growth of EVs in China and the transfer of technology and knowledge. She has published in leading peer-reviewed journals including Business History Review and Business History.

She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Chinese Literature at National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan. Her research interests include modern Shanghai fiction and the post-1950s literature of Eileen Chang. Major edited works are ‘Hong Kong Literature and Culture of the 1950s series’ (6 volumes), Hong Kong :1960s and The 1960s of Leung Ping Kwan. She also publishes essays, stories and poems. She is the co-producer of the documentaries 1918: Liu Yichang and Boundary: Leung Ping Kwan. Professor Ji Li (The University of Hong Kong) Ji Li is an Associate Professor of History at the Department of History and Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Hong Kong. Her research areas center on the social and religious history of late imperial and modern China, particularly the history of Christianity, religion and local society, women and gender, and cross-cultural studies. She has published books and articles in both English and Chinese. She is the author of God’s Little Daughters: Catholic Women in Nineteenth-Century Manchuria (Washington 2015), Missions Étrangères de Paris (MEP) and Chinese Society from the Seventeenth Century to the Present (Brill 2021), and At the Frontier of God’s Empire: A Missionary Odyssey in Modern China (Oxford 2023).

Lev Nachman is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Institute of National Development at National Taiwan University. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Irvine in 2021, and was previously the Hou Family Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Harvard Fairbank Center. His work focuses on political participation in Taiwan and Hong Kong and US-Taiwan relations. His publications span both disciplinary and regional academic journals, including Asian Survey and Political Research Quarterly. He is also a Non-Resident Fellow at the Atlantic Council Global China Hub and the National Bureau of Asian Research and regularly comments on contemporary Taiwanese politics. His work has been featured in various media outlets including the New York Times, CNN, and Foreign Affairs.

He has published 4 solo-authored books and 12 edited books in English. He is the chief editor of a few book series, including “Routledge Studies in Comparative Asian Politics” and “Asia in the New Millennium” with University Press of Kentucky. Jeffrey E. Thomas , Associate Dean for International Programs & Professor of Law, University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law. He is the Daniel L. Brenner Faculty Scholar, Professor of Law and Associate Dean at UMKC School of Law. He earned his BA from Loyola Marymount University and his JD from the University of California – Berkeley. His research focuses on law and culture, the rule of law, and insurance law. With his co-author Yan Dong he recently published the Empirical Study of the Role of Chinese Guiding Case System in Chinese Law in the Hong Kong Law Journal. Qiang Fang, professor of East Asian history at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He was President of Association of Chinese Professors of Social Sciences (2021-2024) and Chinese Historians in the United States (2017-2019). He is the editor of American Review of China Studies and “China from Revolution to Reform.” He has authored and coauthored many books including, among others, Who is Studying China: A Guideline of Overseas China Centers (2024), China Under Xi Jinping: A New Assessment (2024), and etc.

Joseph Torigian is an associate professor at the School of International Service at American University in Washington and a Center Associate of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. Previously, he was a Research Fellow at Stanford's Hoover History Lab, a Visiting Fellow at the China in the World Program at Australian National University, a Stanton Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton-Harvard's China and the World Program, a Postdoctoral (and Predoctoral) Fellow at Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC), a Predoctoral Fellow at George Washington University's Institute for Security and Conflict Studies, an IREX scholar affiliated with the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, and a Fulbright Scholar at Fudan University in Shanghai. His first book, "Prestige, Manipulation, and Coercion: Elite Power Struggles in the Soviet Union and China after Stalin and Mao" was released with Yale University Press, and "The Party's Interests Come First: The Life of Xi Zhongxun, Father of Xi Jinping" was published by Stanford University Press in 2025.

Dr. Rundong Ning (The University of Hong Kong) Rundong Ning is an RGC Post-doctoral Fellow at the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. His research interests include work and labor, entrepreneurship, volunteerism, and digital economy. Professor Selda Altan (Randolph College) Selda Altan is Associate Professor of History at Randolph College. She specializes in labor history, colonialism, and comparative empires. Her research examines the experiences of Chinese workers in transnational and imperial contexts, with a particular focus on labor markets, migration, and capitalist development.

Vincent Goossaert is a historian of Chinese religions, with special focues on Taoism. He works mainly with texts (canonical sources, local histories, archives, inscriptions, vernacular literature), but always leaves room for fieldwork, using a historical anthropological approach. He has long focused on institutions and regulations, and is now giving greater attention to practices (spiritual exercises) and ideas (the history of eschatologies). After publishing works on the 20th century, he now focuses on the religious formation of early modern China (10th-14th centuries) and on literate spirituality at the end of the empire. Have a look at his monography "Making the Gods Speak" (Harvard University Press 2022). Barbara Ambros is a professor in East Asian Religions in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research on Japanese Religions has focused on gender studies, human-animal relationships, and place and space. She has published in journals such as the Japanese Journal of Religious Studies, Religions, Monumenta Nipponica, Asian Ethnology, Material Religion, and Asian Cultural Studies. Her book publications include Le donne nell’ordine monastico buddhista (Myo Edizioni, 2019), Women in Japanese Religions (New York University Press, 2015), Bones of Contention: Animals and Religion in Contemporary Japan (University of Hawai‘i Press, 2012), and Emplacing a Pilgrimage: The Early Modern Ōyama Cult and Regional Religion (Harvard University Asia Center, 2008). Natasha Heller is a cultural historian of Chinese Buddhism with research interests spanning the premodern period (primarily 10th through 14th c.) and the contemporary era. Her work seeks to find unexplored perspectives through which to understand religious history. Illusory Abiding: The Cultural Construction of the Chan Monk Zhongfeng Mingben, her first book, is a study of an eminent monk of the Yuan dynasty using poetry, calligraphy, and gong’an commentary to explore the social and cultural dimensions of Chan Buddhism. She continue to write frequently on Song and Yuan dynasty Buddhism and have authored or co-authored many book chapters and journal articles, including for Brill’s Encyclopedia of Buddhism. The relationship between religion and literature is an ongoing concern in her research.

Dr. Christopher F. Kim (Visiting Assistant Professor, Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, New York University) Chris Kim is Visiting Assistant Professor at New York University’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. His research examines statecraft, political economy, and the spatial dynamics of state power in Zhou China (1045–221 BCE) through paleographic, archaeological, and textual analysis. His current book project, Building the Qi State: Lineage, Economy, and Territorial Organization in Early China, investigates the development of territorial administration, bureaucratic officialdom, urban networks, and monetary zones in the state of Qi in Shandong during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. In addition, his research interests include the origins of coinage in China, Eastern Zhou kingship, and discovering innovative applications of GIS and other spatial analysis approaches to map the early Chinese world. He has previously published studies on salt in the Western Zhou state and on Bronze Age Chinese political economies. Chris received his PhD from Columbia University, MA from Harvard University, and BA from Brown University.

There he is turning his PhD dissertation—a wide-ranging history of the Chinese financial crisis of the 1880s—into a book manuscript. That study, researched at archives in Shanghai, Taipei, and London, explores the ways in which China’s integration into global capitalism in the late-nineteenth century made the late-Qing financial system increasingly fragile, as well as the consequences of that financial fragility for Qing society writ large.

Yi-tze Lee received his Ph.D. of Anthropology from University of Pittsburgh in 2012. He teaches at Department of Ethnic Relations and Cultures, National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan, where he served as the departmental chair (2021-2024), and currently a visiting Fulbright scholar at University of Washington. He has been doing fieldwork among the indigenous peoples in Taiwan, especially with the Amis people. His research interests cover indigenous revitalization and resilience, including agricultural transition, food sovereignty, ritual performance, infrastructure/landscape building, and multispecies networking.

Adam K. Frost is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellow at Copenhagen Business School. His research draws upon novel historical sources and original datasets to explore the history of entrepreneurship and innovation in 20th century China. His work has examined the socio-spatial dimensions of technological diffusion in the cotton industry of Republican China, the entrepreneurial production of space in contemporary Xi’an, and the coevolution of statecraft and informal entrepreneurial ecosystems in Maoist China. Leksa Lee is an anthropologist and an Assistant Professor of Global Commerce at Denison University. Her research is focused on the rise of China, postsocialist capitalism, and the design of the built environment. Her book project is an ethnography of a design firm in China that builds new museums, theme parks, and tourism developments for local governments. The book examines the complex politics of the government contracting process, and how designers and local government officials negotiate conflicting priorities to ultimately portray history and culture in public space amid the tightening cultural politics of the Xi Jinping era.

Dr. Xizi Luo (Postdoctoral Fellow, Institute of Historical Research and Economic History Society University of Oxford) Xizi Luo is a scholar of economic history with broad interests in institutions, inequality, culture and ideas, political economy, and development economics. She earned her PhD in Economic History from the London School of Economics in August 2024. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research and Economic History Society, based at the University of Oxford (2024–2025). Her doctoral dissertation explored the interaction between social mobility and institutions in shaping inequality in premodern Chinese society. Her current research investigates the long-term political and economic impact of Wang Yangming’s philosophy, contributing to interdisciplinary debates on the role of ideas in institutional and developmental trajectories.

Professor Sijie Hu (Assistant Professor, School of Economics at Renmin University of China) Sijie Hu is an Assistant Professor in the School of Economics at Renmin University of China. She holds a Ph.D. in Economic History from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her research focuses on Chinese historical demography and economic history, with an emphasis on understanding micro-demographic dynamics in traditional China using large-scale individual-level data. She was awarded the Sir Timothy Coghlan Prize for the best article in the Asia-Pacific Economic History Review (2023), won First Prize for Best Research Paper at the 7th International Symposium on Quantitative History, and was a finalist for the Best Dissertation Award at the 19th World Economic History Congress. As Principal Investigator, she has received a Youth Scholar Grant from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Professor Micah S. Muscolino (University of California, San Diego) Micah S. Muscolino is professor and Paul G. Nie Youping (PhD candidate in Anthropology at CUHK) Nie Youping is a PhD candidate in Anthropology at CUHK. My research interests include landscape, cosmology, state governance, and rural China. My dissertation, A Geography of Uncertainty: Weather, Technology, and Cosmology in South-central China, explores the entanglement of state technocratic projects and local cosmology, i.e., local spiritual beliefs, in understanding and acting upon the concept of “uncertainty” associated with weather patterns in a Chinese village. This village is situated in the Dongting Lake basin, a region prone to extreme climate fluctuations between drought and flooding.

Her research focuses on Korean churches and missionaries in early 20th-century Manchuria, examining how Christianity shaped identity, mobility, and resistance under colonial rule. She has led multidisciplinary, grant-funded projects on religiosity, intercultural development, and transnational history. Drawing from history, religious studies, and education, her work highlights the role of faith-based networks in shaping inter-Asian connections and sheds light on the cultural dynamics of empire in East Asia. Karli Shimizu: An affiliated researcher at the Research Faculty of Media and Communication of Hokkaido University, Japan. Recent publications include “The Legacy of Shinto Shrines at the Borders of Imperial Japan” in Heritage, Contested Sites, and Borders of Memory in the Asia Pacific (2023, Edward Boyle and Steven Ivings, eds.) and the monograph Overseas Shinto Shrines: Religion, Secularity and the Japanese Empire (2022). Her research interests lie in the legacy of Shrine shrines located outside of Japan and the construction of colonial and postcolonial secularisms. Ziyi Zhang: Born in Beijing, China, and is currently enrolled in the Doctoral Program at the University of Tokyo, specializing in the history of the relationship between religions and state in modern Japan. My research focuses particularly on how state and individual relationships are expressed through "Shinto rituals." I am specifically interested in the process of formulating the shrine system and the institutional connections between overseas and Japanese shrines.

Professor Chen Tao (Tongji University) Chen Tao is Associate Professor of German Studies at Tongji University, Shanghai. He received a PhD in history in 2014 and was visiting scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Institute für Zeitgeschichte Berlin, Potsdamer Zentrum für Forschung der Zeitgeschichte, Universität Göttingen, and National Chengchi University at Taipei. Chen is the author of two books and the co-editor of Economic Alliance, Economic Split (Routledge, 2025). Chen’s research appeared in Journal of Contemporary History, Cold War History, European Review of History, The International History Review, Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte, and The China Review, etc. His current research focuses on Chinese and East Asian Business History as well as Sino-German/European relations since 1945.

Qianqiu Liu 刘千秋：Shidler College Distinguished Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He specializes in empirical asset pricing, financial econometrics, international finance, market microstructure, and personal financial planning. Dr. Liu has been published in leading finance journals, including Review of Financial Studies, Management Science, Journal of International Money and Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, and Journal of Empirical Finance, among others. He earned his Ph.D. in Finance from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Yifan Chen 陈逸凡：Assistant Professor of Finance and Real Estate at the Shidler College of Business, University of Hawaii at Manoa. Pei-Chia Lan

Shitong Qiao is a professor of law and the Ken Young-Gak Yun and Jinah Park Yun Research Scholar at Duke University. He previously taught property and comparative law at the University of Hong Kong and New York University and was a law and public affairs fellow at Princeton University. Professor Qiao employs mixed methods to explore the relationship between political power, law, and private ordering. He has published numerous articles in top Chinese and US law journals and a prize-winning book about law and marketization, Chinese Small Property: The Co-Evolution of Law and Social Norms (Cambridge University Press, 2017).

Kate A. Lingley: Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Her research focuses on Buddhist votive sculpture of the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, with a particular interest in the social history of religious art in medieval China. She is currently working on a book manuscript on the lives of Buddhist women in medieval China, as seen through the votive monuments they dedicated, and an edited collection on the epigraphic evidence for women’s role in early Buddhism across Asia. Michael Norton: PhD Candidate in History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University. He earned his MA from Tsinghua University (2019), where he studied Chinese Buddhist art and archaeology of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. He received his BA in Chinese Language and Asian Studies with a minor in Art History from Vassar College (2014). His research addresses Buddhist cosmological imagery, ecological themes in sculpture and painting, and visual depictions of sound and acoustic motifs.

Teemu Ruskola, University of Pennsylvania

Ruslan Yusupov: A sociocultural anthropologist interested in understanding how Muslim communities find a place for themselves and their Islam in Chinese modernity. Ruslan is currently completing his first book manuscript project which is tentatively title “Rectifying Multiculturalism: Islam, Development and Securitization in Contemporary China” and which explores how the securitizing measures today other and racialize the past development, progress and modernization of Sinophone Muslims. Ruslan obtained his PhD from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and he is currently based at the Weatherhead Center at Harvard. Yuting Wang: Professor of Sociology at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Her research focuses on Islam and Muslims in China, the Chinese diaspora in the Arab Gulf, and China’s soft power in the MENA region. She has published extensively, including two monographs: Between Islam and the American Dream: An Immigrant Muslim Community in Post-9/11 America (Routledge, 2014) and Chinese in Dubai: Money, Pride, and Soul-Searching (Brill, 2020). Susan McCarthy: Professor of political science at Providence College in Rhode Island. Her research examines the politics of ethnicity and religion in China. Among the questions animating her work is how minority ethnic and religious groups seize opportunities created by CCP policies to pursue cultural and religious objectives, often in ways that support regime goals. She is the author of Communist Multiculturalism: Ethnic Revival in Southwest China (2009), along with articles and book chapters on these topics.

Professor Yuanchong Wang (University of Delaware) Yuanchong Wang is an associate professor specializing in late imperial and modern China and East Asia in the Department of History at the University of Delaware. He is the author of Remaking the Chinese Empire: Manchu-Korean Relations, 1616–1911 (Cornell University Press, 2018) and the Chinese-language book Zhong Mei Xiangyu: Daguo waijiao yu Wanqing xingshuai, 1784–1911 (“The Meeting of China and the United States: Power Diplomacy and the Rise and Fall of Late Qing”; Wenhui chubanshe, 2021). He is currently working on a book manuscript exploring state building in modern China, alongside several other research projects on late imperial China and East Asia. Dr. Zigui Li (Sun Yat-sen University) Zigui Li is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of History at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou. With a Ph.D. from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Dr. Li’s dissertation focused on the historical significance of the North-China Herald newspaper company from 1850 to 1900. Research interests include the mechanisms of Sino-foreign information exchange and the societal transformations associated with it, particularly through the lens of printing, publishing, and the newspaper industry in late imperial China. Contributions to peer-reviewed journals encompass analyses of news distribution systems in late Qing Shanghai and the influence of foreign companies on Sino-British diplomacy and public discourse. Dr. Li has received several competitive grants, including the National Social Science Fund of China’s Young Scholar Project. Dr. Li engages with diverse historical sources, especially English manuscripts in the 19th century.

Bruce Aronson is senior advisor to the Japan Center of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute and an adjunct professor at NYU School of Law. He has been a tenured professor of law at universities in the United States (Creighton University) and Japan (Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo). Before beginning his academic career, he was a corporate partner at the law firm of Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP in New York. He also served as an independent director at Eisai Co., Ltd., a listed Japanese pharmaceutical company. Professor Aronson twice received Fulbright grants to be a senior research scholar at the University of Tokyo and at Waseda University, and was a visiting scholar at the Bank of Japan. His main area of research is comparative corporate governance with a focus on Japan and Asia. Publications include a textbook, Corporate Governance in Asia: A Comparative Approach (with J. Kim, Cambridge University Press, 2019). His recent publication Designing a New Framework to Regulate Hostile Takeovers in a Changing Japan is available here. Andrew McDermott is the founder and president of Mission Value Partners, which manages a global equity portfolio that is currently 100% invested in Japan. Hideaki Roy Umetsu is managing partner of the New York office of Mori Hamada & Matsumoto. He specializes in cross-border M&A and investment and has extensive experience in advising Japanese companies about business and human rights issues. He has advised a number of Japanese clients on establishing appropriate global compliance programs and conducing or assisting internal investigations and implementing preventive measures. Kazuko Ito is founder and vice president of Human Rights Now, president of Human Rights Now New York, and an attorney at law. She serves as chair of the Gender Equality Committee of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, and is a board member of the Gender Law Society and International Human Rights Law Society in Japan. Ms. Ito has written numerous books and articles on human rights issues, including “Wrongful Convictions and Criminal Justice Reform in Japan” in the University of Cincinnati Law Review and a chapter in the book “The Global Me Too Movement: How Social Media Propelled a Historic Movement and How the Law Responded” (2020). Lijing Jiang, Johns Hopkins University

王悠 Wáng Yōu: Harper-Schmidt Fellow and Collegiate Assistant Professor in Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. Her current book project, Collaboration amidst Conflict: Rural Communities and the Making of a Sustainable Waterscape in the Lower Yangzi Delta, 1500-1850, examines everyday human-environment interactions in China’s economic and cultural center through hydraulic institutions, agricultural knowledge production, and gendered labor regimes. She will begin her new role as Assistant Professor in Chinese History at Georgetown University this August. 彭依芸 Yiyun Peng: Assistant professor of History and East Asian Studies at Oberlin College. She works on the history of science and technology, environmental history, and economic history in late imperial and modern China. Her current book project, A Herbaceous Revolution: How Crop-Based Handicraft Industries Transformed Upland Southeast China, 1500-1970, explores how the production of crop-based commodities—indigo dye, ramie (fiber plant) cloth, tobacco, and bamboo paper—in upland Southeast China sparked a prolonged transformation of the region’s environment, economy, and society. 高原 Yuan Gao: A postdoc associate at the Program in Agrarian Studies at Yale and the incoming Assistant Professor of Chinese History at Case Western Reserve University. She is an environmental historian of northwestern China and Central Eurasia. Christina L. Davis is the Edwin O. Reischauer Professor of Japanese Politics in the Department of Government and director of the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations at Harvard University. During the 2024-25 academic year she is on leave at Oxford University (affiliated to Queen's College) as the Centenary Visiting Professor in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. Her research interests include the politics and foreign policy of Japan, East Asia, and the study of international organizations, with a focus on trade policy. She is the author of Discriminatory Clubs: The Geopolitics of International Organizations (Princeton University Press, 2023), Food Fights Over Free Trade: How International Institutions Promote Agricultural Trade Liberalization (Princeton University Press 2003), and Why Adjudicate? Enforcing Trade Rules in the WTO (Princeton University Press 2012, winner of the international law best book award of the International Studies Association, Ohira Memorial Prize, and co-winner of Chadwick Alger Prize). Professor Davis holds an AB in East Asian studies and Ph.D. in political science, both from Harvard. Pasha Hsieh is professor of law at Singapore Management University and holds the Jean Monnet Chair in EU-ASEAN Law and Relations. His teaching and research focus on international economic law, public international law, EU-ASEAN law, and Asian legal studies. In addition to numerous scholarly articles, he is the author of New Asian Regionalism in International Economic Law (Cambridge University Press, 2022) and co-editor of ASEAN Law in the New Regional Economic Order: Global Trends and Shifting Paradigms (Cambridge University Press 2019). Professor Hsieh holds an LL.B from National Chengchi University in Taiwan and LL.M and J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. His Ph.D. in political science is from the Free University of Brussels. He began his career as an attorney in a New York law firm and has served as a legal affairs officer at the WTO Appellate Body Secretariat.

Jin Feng 冯进: Professor of Chinese and Japanese and Orville and Mary Patterson Routt Professor of Literature at Grinnell College. She has published five English monographs: The New Woman in Early Twentieth-Century Chinese Fiction (2004), The Making of a Family Saga (2009), Romancing the Internet (2013), Tasting Paradise on Earth (2019), and The Transpacific Flow (2024); three Chinese books such as A Book for Foodies 吃货之书 (2020); and numerous articles in English and Chinese. Thomas DuBois: A historian of modern China and professor at Beijing Normal University. After two decades (and three books) on the topic of religion, he decided to study China’s food systems, a topic which has taken him from cattle ranches to cooking school. His new book, China in Seven Banquets: A Flavourful History was published by Reaktion books in 2024 and is set for release in Chinese and Japanese translations.

Chaihark Hahm is a professor of law at Yonsei Law School. His research has focused on comparative constitutional law, democratic political theory, Confucian philosophy, and Korean legal culture and history. His works in English have appeared in the Journal of Democracy, American Journal of Comparative Law, and I•CON: International Journal of Constitutional Law, among others. He is author of The Constitution of South Korea: A Contextual Analysis (Hart, 2024) and co-author of Making We the People: Democratic Constitutional Founding in Postwar Japan and South Korea (Cambridge University Press, 2015). He holds law degrees from Seoul National University, Yale Law School, Columbia Law School, and Harvard Law School, as well as a master’s degree from Yale Divinity School. Jiunn-rong Yeh is the National Taiwan University Chair Professor at the College of Law of National Taiwan University in Taipei. He writes and teaches about constitutional law including comparative constitutional law, environmental policy, and administrative law. Between 2002 and 2018, Professor Yeh served as minister without portfolio (in charge of inter-ministerial coordination), minister of the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission (overseeing government functions in the Cabinet), member and secretary-general of the National Assembly, minister of the interior, and minister of education. He is author of The Constitution of Taiwan: A Contextual Analysis (Hart, 2016) and co-editor of Asian Courts in Context (Cambridge University Press, 2015).
