With the generous support from the Eurasia Foundation (from Asia), the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology will organize a new lecture series “Encounters in the Old World, East and West: From a Transdisciplinary Perspective” from October 2025 to April 2026. The series will feature 15 lectures, focusing on early interaction, connectivity, and relationships across time and space between European and Asian civilizations. Abstract: The culture of the Han Chinese, also called Huaxia culture or Chinese culture, is rich and varied and a culture of great importance that was created by the ancestors of the Chinese people through long-term production and practical implementation in society. During the long epoch prior to more recent times, culture of this type was the most advanced in the world, and it generated a strong radiation that exerted influence on the surrounding countries and territories, especially the East Asian nations of Korea and Japan, and even the states of South-east Asia, including Vietnam.

 

Korea was one of the earliest nations to adopt Chinese characters and Confucian culture. Throughout its subsequent historical development, Korean society has demonstrated a particularly profound acceptance and institutionalization of Confucian principles. This lecture will principally discuss the transmission of Chinese characters and Confucian thought in Korea, as well as the influence of Chinese characters on the Confucian record-keeping culture of the Joseon period.
