Professor Chun Fung Tong (The University of Hong Kong)
Chun Fung Tong is an assistant professor at the School of Chinese and Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong. He studied history at the Chinese University of Hong Kong for his BA and MPhil degrees and received a PhD in Sinology from Heidelberg University. This talk explores the logistics networks of the Qin state during its war of unification between 230 and 221 BCE. First, the article investigates the Qin’s “assigned transfer” logistics system, which was comprised of two forms, namely, the transfer of resources among regional administrative units, and that between the central and regional governments. Second, it examines the infrastructures and institutions underpinning this logistics system during the Qin conquest, exploring how the emergence of long-distance, empire-wide military logistics networks might have contributed to economic development and driven reforms of the Qin financial administration. Overall, this talk unfolds not only the institutional reforms stimulated by the Qin’s war of unification but also the impact of war on social development.
