Most artifacts and spaces relevant to the study of arts and to archaeological research have a tangible existence. But how do we examine the intangible, especially those that last only a fleeting moment? In recent years, research into the history of human senses has flourished, a history that can be considered a history of ephemeral arts. What breakthroughs can we still achieve in this area? Through tangible objects, can we focus on intangible, fleeting arts, such as studying the ephemeral acts of bronze bells ringing, qin zithers playing, and tea whisking? Can we explore the fleeting movements involved, the sound produced by bells and qin strings, and the visual, palatable, and olfactory experiences generated by them? These extremely interesting issues deserve to be addressed.
