Long after decades of being hidden from sight, Su Shi’s (1037–1101) attributed painting Old Tree, Rock, and Bamboo burst into the public eye last year amid a torrent of renewed scrutiny. Peter Sturman considers the broader issue of inscriptional practices among the Song literati as modern-day scholars attempt to resolve questions of authenticity, authorship, and provenance.
